Acer Ethos 5951G

Can’t decide whether to get a laptop, a desktop PC or a media centre? Why not buy a computer that’s good enough to be all three?

The ultimate media centre

Acer’s new Ethos 5951G is a multimedia powerhouse, that’s as happy playing the latest games as it is tucking up into your bag to take on the road.

It uses Intel’s second generation Core i5 processor for exceptional desktop performance combined with more than respectable battery life, so that it will keep going for around four hours between charges – if you stick to standard tasks like a little light email, word processing and web browsing. The 15.6-inch screen is large and comfortable to work on for long periods at a time too.

When you need a bit more power, though, the discrete NVIDIA graphics card kicks in – it will drain the battery a bit more quickly, but will also let the laptop run the latest games without dropping framerates. Whether it’s Diablo III or Battlefield 3, you can turn the image quality settings up and enjoy them as the designers intended them to be.

The 5951G is a great gamer, but it’s designed to be the ultimate media centre too. Just plug it into your TV via the HDMI-out and it will playback Blu-ray quality digital movie files from your choice of internet service or the spacious 750GB hard drive. But even better than that – it comes with its own remote control.

When you’re sitting on the sofa and the Ethos 5951G is on the far side of the room, just slide off the mouse pad and it becomes a wireless remote with touch sensitive media playback and volume controls built in.

It’s a unique feature that’s the crowning glory on an otherwise splendid laptop, Full marks.

Verdict

The ultimate do-it-all machine, designed for multimedia, great for gaming and with a huge battery life for when you’re on the go.
