How to test your broadband speed
Check your broadband and compare it to the standards in your area to make sure you’re getting the speed you’re paying for.
We all like to know how fast our broadband is running. Regularly checking the performance is important not only to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth but also to see that it’s working properly.
If you search online there are several speed tests available but we’re going to recommend a few below that tick the right boxes.
Before testing, it’s important to make sure your system is set correctly. This means no other computers are downloading or uploading files, no one is streaming BBC iPlayer, making video calls or generally using the broadband in the house.
Ideally you should also use a wired Ethernet connection to your broadband router. This will ensure you get the best results possible.
The speed tests are likely to produce variable results. So it’s best to run the tests a few times and at different periods of the day before drawing a conclusion.
Top 3 speed test sites
1.Best for comparisons – USwitch
If you’re thinking of changing your broadband provider then we recommend the USwitch speed test. This not only provides accurate testing, it also gives you a speed comparison with other local results and a price comparison – so you can see if you could get a better or faster deal.
2. Best for pure speed – SpeedTest.Net
We also recommend you test for out-and-out speed using Speedtest.net. This is a long-running speed test service and tends to return some of the fastest and most accurate results. It tries to use local servers and so produces better results.
3. Best for the bigger picture – Broadband Speed Checker
Ignore the ‘Run a scan’ advert button and click ‘Start speed test’. The best part of this site is that you get a map comparing your results with other people nearby and also one for the national average broadband speed. This enables you to check your broadband is running correctly and also lets you see if you’re getting value for money in your area.
