IFA 2012: Microsoft Windows 8 tablets and laptops
Get set for a huge range of gadgets powered by the new Windows 8 operating system.
We were expecting a strong outing for new Windows 8 devices at IFA 2012 and we haven’t been disappointed. All the big names like Dell, Samsung, Sony, Asus and HP have revealed smart laptops, tablets and All-In-Ones running Windows 8 and its ARM version Windows RT.
Here’s a rundown of the Windows 8 devices to look out for when the operating system launches at the end of October:
Sony Vaio Duo 11

Sony gives us the best of all worlds with this converting laptop-tablet hybrid. An easy-slide of the screen converts it instantly from a Windows 8 laptop into a full Windows 8 tablet. It boasts an impressive 11.6-inch Full HD 1080p display and comes with various processor options to suit your pocket.
Samsung Ativ Tab
A pure Windows RT tablet with none of the quirks. This is a 10.1-inch HD tablet with a 1366×768 resolution that’s less than 9mm thin. It’s powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz ARM processor and features front 1.9MP and rear 5MP cameras. Shipping with Microsoft Office this will be an excellent student choice.
Dell XPS One 27 Touch

Dell’s all-in-one 27-inch computer gets a touch-based revamp. Featuring a high-end Intel Core i7 processor it’ll power pretty much anything you want it to. That screen boasts a 2560×1440 resolution and ten-point touch detection.
Asus Taichi

A laptop with two displays that sit on either side of the lid. This quirky set-up means it can be used as a laptop, as a tablet when it’s closed, or even by two people at once.
Expect a limited release in 2013.
HP SpectreXT TouchSmart Ultrabook

This Ultrabook has a smart 15.6-inch touchscreen. For fast connectivity there are Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports and it’s powered by a 3rd-generation Intel Core processor. At 17.9mm and 2.1kg it’s thin and light too.
Asus Vivo Tab
Asus showed off its Asus Vivo Tab, which is very similar in looks to the Asus Transformer Android tablet. If that’s not confusing enough it’s available in an ARM-based Nvidia Tegra 3 Windows RT model and an Intel-based Windows 8 version. You can tell them apart as the Windows RT version is 10.6-inches and the Windows 8 version is 11.6-inches in size.
Dell XPS 10 and Dell Duo 12
More Dell Windows 8 loving. The Dell XPS 10 is a straightforward Windows RT ARM tablet that offers a solid keyboard dock and 10-inch widescreen. The dock provides the potential for a mammoth 20-hours of runtime.
Dell’s other Windows 8 offering was the convertible Dell XPS Duo 12. As per previous Duo models the screen can be flipped in its frame. It’s an impressive little device with a 1920×1280 12-inch resolution screen and options for an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor.
