Sony SMP-N200B Mediabox review
Almost entirely unadorned save for a single blue light on the front, Sony’s SMP-N200B Mediabox is an aluminium cube of joy that will grace any lounge with its good looks.
It’s designed to get digital files from your PC or networked hard drive on to your TV with as little fuss as possible, and needless to say it does that with aplomb.
If you’ve ever used a PlayStation 3 or other Sony media device, you’ll feel right at home with the XrossMediaBar interface for finding and streaming files off of your home network.
Navigating is done via the handset of your choice – there’s a supplied remote or you can use a smartphone or tablet app to control the player.
The SMP-N200B will stream files from your local network using ethernet or the built-in wireless transceiver, but if you’re feeling especially adventurous you can also use it to access on-demand internet services like BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm and Netflix, as well as Sky News and YouTube. Finding and playing back HD shows is as simple as picking up the remote.
Most important of all, however, is the SMP-N200B’s support for a wide variety of file types for media, and excellent picture and sound quality in the decoder.
And, of course, it’s silent, so once installed you’ll hardly know it’s there.
Verdict
A good looking media streamer with access to a wide variety of both free and paid for online streams.
