Dyson vacuums buyer's guide
Dyson vacuum cleaners have revolutionised home cleaning. Despite their stylish, space-age design, Dyson machines are a great example of functionality taking priority over form. The Dyson range is brilliantly constructed to combat the biggest problem that many normal cleaners suffer from – a gradual loss of suction.
How do Dyson vacuum cleaners work?
Unlike traditional vacuum cleaners, Dyson machines do not contain a dustbag. When the dustbag fills up in a normal cleaner, suction begins to get weaker – so more dust is left behind on the carpet.
Because Dyson vacuum cleaners don't have this bag, they don't lose suction. Instead, the patented Root Cyclone technology spins air at a very high speed. The dirt from the floor is thrown straight into the clear bin drum by centrifugal force. The air leaving the vacuum is cleaner than the air that entered it – with even tiny particles such as pollen left in the machine.
Types of Dyson vacuum cleaner
Upright
The classic design, but with that added Dyson flare. Uprights provide maximum floor-cleaning power with a large cleaning head; these are best for removing pet hair and covering large spaces. Dyson models also come with a telescopic pole and tools to make it easier to tackle furniture and staircases.
Cylinder
All the power of an upright Dyson, but in a compact space-saving cylinder form. As these are generally smaller and lighter, they’re easier to move around a crowded home. The separate cleaning head makes them perfect for cleaning stairs and getting around or under furniture. They are, however, more cumbersome to store and don’t usually offer as much suction as uprights.
Hand-held
Perfectly portable, cordless and easy to store, these mini-vacuum cleaners suit a host of jobs, meaning that you no longer need to trail around with a huge, heavy vacuum cleaner. Clean the car, stairs and other hard-to-reach places with the ease of a rechargeable, cordless cleaner. Less suction and a limited capacity and battery life mean that these are best suited to smaller jobs.
Benefits of a Dyson vacuum cleaner
Superb suction
The best news is that the Dyson has suction aplenty – essential in all vacuum cleaners. Its innovative design means it’ll never stop, either.
Bagless
You will never have to replace a bag ever again, so you can avoid the fuss and cost of putting in a new dustbag every time the old one gets full.
Versatile
Dyson vacuum cleaners are great for both large carpets and hard floors, while their handy tools allow you to handle furniture, staircases and much more without difficulty.
Stylish, sturdy and innovative
The Dyson is probably the best-looking vacuum cleaner range there is.
‘Lifetime’ filter
Dyson's permanent HEPA filter never needs replacing: simply wash it under a running tap and it's ready to get back to work.
Hygienic
The suction is so powerful, and removes so much dust, that the British Allergy Foundation approves many Dyson products for allergy sufferers.
Useful, convenient tools
Dyson's extendable hose is ideal for vacuuming stairs, while the telescopic reach allows you to take on curtains or overhead cobwebs without the hassle of assembly.
