Fridges buyer's guide
Buying a new fridge can be a bewildering affair, as these days there are so many choices available. You need to consider what size and capacity of fridge you need. Then ask yourself – do you just want a standard unit or a fridge freezer? What extra features should you look out for? Our buying guide to fridges answers all these questions, meaning you can just chill out. You should start by considering what type and size of fridge you need.
Styles and capacities of fridges:
The upright
The standard fridge design is available in standard 85cm height models that can also fit under the counter with capacities up to 150 litres, and in tall units up to 175cm in height, providing a massive 350 litres of fresh-food storage.
The mini-fridge
As the name suggests, these diminutive tabletop or portable freezers provide reduced chilled storage of around 50 litres. Often designed for storing drinks, these are a great way of freeing up your regular fridge space when you require a bit of extra room, such as for parties.
The wine cabinet
Not just a mini-fridge, wine cabinets are specifically designed with wine storage in mind. Perfect for keeping white wine chilled or red wines at a constant temperature, larger units also have separate temperature zones for storing both types, with adjustable temperatures.
The fridge-freezer
A fridge-freezer is the best option if you need the maximum refrigerated and frozen storage from a single appliance. Tall 200cm models will provide between 200 and 300 litres of fresh-food storage. Smaller models will range from around 130 to 180 litres.
The side-by-side fridge-freezer
If space isn’t an issue in your kitchen, then the option of a side-by-side fridge-freezer should appeal. This all-in-one solution effectively provides a tall fridge and freezer in one stylish appliance. At around 90cm across, they provide up to 380 litres of fresh-food storage.
Energy efficiency
Freezers are rated on a scale of ‘A++’ to ‘G’ according to their energy efficiency. ‘A++’ appliances are the most efficient and are therefore cheaper to run and better for the environment, while ‘G’ rated appliances are the least efficient.
Take Home Today
If you need your new refrigerator quicker than our standard delivery times, look out for selected items with the ‘Take Home Today’ logo. These items are available in selected stores for same day collection. Simply contact the store to check that the item is in stock and then collect.
