Hobs buyer's guide
Versatile, good looking and efficient, a good hob will serve you well for all of your cooking duties and a separate unit has the advantage that it can be placed anywhere in your kitchen and be any size or shape. With a full range of gas and electric hobs to choose and full installation options available, Tesco is the perfect place to start looking.
Types of hobs:
Gas
Gas hobs have many advantages: they’re usually cheaper, have a visible heat source – so reducing the risk of burns, and are instantly adjustable. The pan supports, however, can be harder to keep clean.
Ceramic
Ceramic hobs have a single surface, making them extremely easy to clean. The heating elements are hidden under the surface, meaning you never need to clean around them as you would with a gas hob.
Induction
Induction hobs are the latest electrical development, providing gas-like instant control over the heating elements, and have an easy wipe clean surface. You do need specific iron-based pans to use these, due to the magnetic heating effect.
Size and shapes
The majority of hobs come in two sizes, the standard four-burner that is 60cm across, and the larger five-burner models that are usually 75cm across. However, more flexible modular options are available that enable you to mix and match hobs. You can even have narrow models that give you a strip of heating elements, which can be useful if you have an awkward worktop space that you need to fit your hob into.
Energy efficiency
Cookers are rated on a scale of ‘A’ to ‘G’ according to their energy efficiency. ‘A’ rated appliances are the most efficient and are therefore cheaper to run and better for the environment, while ‘G’ rated appliances are the least efficient.
Flame failure device
Any gas appliance installed in a multi-occupancy dwelling has to be fitted with a flame failure device by law. You must check that your cooker has one listed as a feature before you make your purchase, as otherwise installation of your appliance will be refused.
Installation or Take Home Today
Don’t leave anything to chance, Tesco can install your gas or electric hob for you, if you include installation as part of your order. We can even disconnect your old hob and replace with the new one, though this will cost you more.
Alternatively look out for selected items with the ‘Take Home Today’ logo. These items are available in selected stores for same day collection.
