Electric screwdrivers buyer's guide
An essential addition to every toolbox, electric screwdrivers save time and effort making it a breeze to insert or remove screws. Useful for any small job, these come into their own on larger projects helping speed up the construction of decking, fences and furniture. With interchangeable heads adding to their versatility it’s worth picking a good driver that’ll suit all of your needs.
A screwdriver can either come in a simple-to-use straight design, a pistol shape or can be multi-positional. The straight electric screwdrivers are the most basic, whereas the pistol shape helps to access awkward angles, and a multi-positional screwdriver will give you the best of both worlds.
This is a measure of how much force a screwdriver can exert on a screw. The greater the available torque the more force it can exert and it’ll be able to cope with the toughest of jobs.
While a screwdriver with a lower torque will be sufficient for occasional day-to-day tasks, a screwdriver with variable torque and a higher range is better suited to more involved assembly jobs where there are lots of different screw types required.
All electric screwdrivers are powered from a rechargeable battery with a charging cradle or power lead. As a general rule the higher the voltage the more power a screwdriver will have.
Lithium ion technology
A more recent battery technology that means they can store more power in a smaller package, so screwdrivers are much more compact, lighter and easier to use. The added benefit of lithium ion technology is that the battery will not run down while the screwdriver is stored.
A locking mechanism that prevents the shaft from rotating so that it can be used as a manual screwdriver. This is useful if you run out of power or need very fine control.
Fast charge battery
A feature that enables the screwdriver battery to be charged in an hour or less. This is ideal if you have forgotten to charge the battery beforehand.
Some models offer an integrated LED light, which is useful for illuminating dark areas.
